What do you mean by calling it a big vocal band? ………. Well, it is a cappella, but it is not a choir, though it may be quite large like a choir. It will have many instrumental (non-lyrical) parts like a jazz ensemble, so you could call it a vocal ensemble, but then it might not convey the kind of groove we want to hit. Its more of a band, a big vocal band, rather than a vocal big band.
What will be the size of this group? ……….Our arrangements span from 4 to 14 parts, so this group will need to be a bit bigger than that to cover parts for performances. The current aim is 20.
What voice parts do we need? ……….We are looking for all voice parts (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) as well as skills in vocal percussion. We tend to think of them instrumentally, so we need parts to cover horns, guitars, keyboards and drums. Ohh, and those who may actually sing lyrics.
When and where will the rehearsals be? ………. rehearsals are on Sundays, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in Venice. Alternate time for sectionals is on Thursday evenings 8-10pm
Some examples of target repertoire? ……….will include: Tower of Power, Talking Heads, Neville Bros., Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sly and the Family Stone, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Chicago, Ohio Players, Eagles, Stevie Wonder, Queen, etc.
What about original creations? ………. yes, there are several we will try out to see if they fit the band, and we will encourage more once we solidfy our groove and what we are especially good at.
What kind of performances are planned?……….we plan to give performances around the local community, schools outreach, CD recording, and some travel.
Are there other groups like this?………. This group is part of the newly formed Contemporary A Cappella League (CAL), a program within the framework of CASA (Contemporary A Cappella Society of America; www.casa.org )
What kind of commitment is required?………. well, this is not a day gig. We want to have some serious fun with this group, and make a community impact without having to be full-time pros. That said, you get out of something what you put into it. We encourage variety in life, and want to make this one part, but not the only part, of yours. There will be dues on the order of $125 a year, $25 of which go to CASA membership.
How can I plan for the audition?……….please bring a short piece you can sing to the audition (plan 15-20 mins for the audition).
More questions? ……….then please call Bart at 310 717 1609.
